Workers employed in all Manitoba workplaces minus those excluded by provincial regulation are covered by workers compensation legislation. Only work-related injuries or occupational illnesses are covered. Any accident, illness or injury that occurs outside the workplace is not covered. According to the Veterans Affairs website, hearing aids and assisted listening devices are eligible for the health benefits program. We noted that “If the benefits covered by VAC do not meet your particular needs, your hearing health professional may submit a request to VAC to provide coverage for a different type of auditory aid. “ The information was found on the web page Treatment Benefits – Programs of Choice (POC). The website also suggests they have provisions for hearing aid batteries.

The Society for Manitobans with Disabilities (SMD) provides funding assistance for people with disabilities. There program assists people with disabilities gain access to products that will improve their daily lives by helping pay for the costs of hearing assistive technology. Eligible applicants may be funded for up to 20% of the actual cost of their assistive technology product purchase (up to a maximum of $2500 per fiscal year). From the same government of Manitoba website, there are more option for assistance with purchasing hearing aids. The webpage says that if you can pay for your basic living costs but cannot afford to pay for your or your family’s health needs, you may be eligible for health care costs.
